Architectural Features

St. Mary's, at Wotton under Edge, is one of the oldest churches in the area. According to this Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Mary_the_Virgin,_Wotton-under-Edge , it was consecrated in August 1283 and it is believed that most of the church as it stands today was completed in 1325.

C15 main shell including clerestory, but early C19 roofs.

Interior: Early 6-bay arcades, round pillars north alternate round and octagonal, south, all with foliage carving.

Wrought iron chancel rail on stone plinth wall, and wrought iron pulpit and reading desks by Waller, about 1885.

This is a replica of the church brass of Margaret, Lady Berkeley (†1392). The original brasses of both she and her husband Thomas, Lord Berkeley (†1417) lie side by side on their tomb-chest, each over 6 ft in length.
