St Peter And St Paul

Hawkley, Hampshire

1865, on the site of a Medieval church, a re-building by Teulon in Neo-Norman style

Architectural Features

Tile-roof, with gables in the centre of the aisles

The steepness of the roof, with the aisle gables, gives a tall effect to the interior, which has plain Norman features, varied by rich Byzantine capitals

Stone pulpit on columns

Purbeck font (C12) from the old church, a square block resting on a central drum, but lacking the former 4 columns at each corner

The tower is of particular interest, with a semicircular stair turret in the centre of the south wall, shallow buttresses in the lowest part, steep helm roof with copper gargoyles at each corner, and tall doorway above a flight of steps
