The Assumption Of St Mary The Virgin

East Wittering

West Sussex

5.6.58 (Formerly the Parish Church of St John the Baptist.) - II* Essentially early C12 the chancel rebuilt 1847, heavily restored 1875-6 by Lacy W Rudge.

Architectural Features

In the north wall, the head of one blocked Norman window and blocked C13 door as well as two modern lancets.

Chancel arch C13 and of two chamfered orders.

Font probably old but wholly recut in C19.

This unusual Norman doorway is on the southern side of [[[4579814]]], unfortunately at present it is impossible to get a clear photograph of it due to the Heras fencing which surrounds it. (see also [[[4580016]]])
I say it is unusual because of the lobed pendants beneath the multiple chevrons, a design I have never seen before. I would guess that this is very late Norman. The crispness of the carving is also surprising, suggesting it may possibly have been recut during the extensive renovations in the Victorian era.
