The small round window seen in the background is in the tower wall and dates from Saxon/Norman times. St Mary's church > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1313645 with its Saxon round tower > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1313639 with 18th century conical top is situated beside the road through Howe on the site of an older place of worship. Inside there is an old tower arch but much of the remaining interior dates from the 19th century, although the 15th century nave roof and its original beams and long wall posts, and the stairs leading up to the rood loft were retained. Sadly this church is kept locked and most unusually, even the porch is padlocked > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1313652.
