PROPHETS

Representations of Old Testament prophets frequently appear as scroll‑bearing FIGURES in medieval churches, often paired with APOSTLES to express theological continuity. Their elongated forms suit the tall lancets of C13 and C14 STAINED GLASS, where they occupy prominent vertical spaces. WALL PAINTINGS also feature prophets, sometimes arranged in tiers beneath scenes of Christ or the Virgin, reinforcing their role as heralds of salvation.

Symbolic interactions enrich their meaning. Prophets often appear near ANGELS, forming part of a celestial hierarchy, or adjacent to ROOD SCREEN, where their scrolls visually announce the coming of Christ. Their imagery contrasts with motifs such as the GREEN MAN or SHEELA NA GIG, which belong to different symbolic traditions. Surviving prophetic figures, especially from the C12 and C13, offer insight into the intellectual and devotional priorities of medieval parish life.
