Architectural Features

TM1485 : Gissing, St. Mary's Church: Norman north doorway capital 2

Round west tower, probably late C11 (probably not earlier) with Norman two-light round-headed bell-openings with dividing shaft and scallop capital, circular windows (probably not Saxon), and small two-light round-headed west window with incised zigzag surround.

Tall tower arch with zigzag carving in arch and plain inposts.

Nave probably late C11 with Norman south doorway with zigzag in arch and one order of shafts with scallop capitals.

Chancel with north and south chapels of early C13 with Y-tracery windows.

Two-storeyed C15 north porch with flushwork panelling, diagonal buttresses, fleurons in arch and flanking niches.

Interior: C15 double-hammerbeam nave roof.

C15 north chapel roof.

Some C15 bench ends, remainder C19.

C15 octagonal font.

Early C17 screen to north chapel.

Monuments: tablets to Kemp family of 1614, 1710, 1734 and 1815.
